Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator's Job Description

The Co-ordinator is the most important person in any Watch. It is his/her task to manage Watch activities and make the Watch as effective as possible. You will need commitment and some basic skills to make your Watch work. It is important to be clear about what the job involves.

Job Title:                 Neighbourhood Watch Scheme Co-ordinator  
Responsible to:        Members of the Watch
Purpose:                 To manage and promote NW activity within the Watch area.

Main Responsibilities: These are likely to include:  
  • Keeping members interested and informing them about local crime
  • Distributing newsletters to members
  • Promoting crime prevention initiatives
  • Liaising with Police through your local beat officer or PCSO
  • Maintaining a current list of members

Main Tasks: These will vary between schemes and a committee or assistant may help the co-ordinator. Tasks may include:

  • Organising meetings
  • Distributing crime prevention material
  • Contacting newcomers to the neighbourhood and recruiting new Watch members
  • Reporting non-urgent information to the police (020 8855 1212)
  • Introducing projects to reduce crime and fear of crime
  • Contacting councils about local concerns (020 8854 8888
  • Responding to police requests for help
  • Monitoring crime, disorder and the issues affecting the quality of life in the local area ~ assessing activities and their impact
  • Representing the Watch at area meetings

Personal Qualities: No specific qualifications are needed to be an effective Co-ordinator, but some qualities and basic skills are essential. These include:

  • Honesty and integrity
  • Willingness to give time and energy working as a volunteer
  • Commitment and enthusiasm for making a practical contribution to safety in your community.
  • The ability to get on well with local residents and the police
  • Good communication skills
