Greenwich Borough Neighbourhood Watch Association Coordinators toolkit:

How Neighbourhood Watch works

Neighbourhood Watch is one of the most successful crime prevention schemes in England and Wales and is based on simple ideas and values.

What is Neighbourhood Watch?

It’s a community based initiative run by volunteers that is supported by the police but owned and run by its members.

The benefits

Some of the benefits of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme include providing a visual warning to would-be criminals that there is an active scheme in operation.

Structure of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme

Every scheme is unique and should be set up to make the most effective use of resources available.

Role of a Principal Co-ordinator

This person tends to be the originator of the scheme – the person who sets up the scheme.

Role of a Street Co-ordinator

The primary role of a co-ordinator is to provide a communications link between co-ordinators and scheme members.

Role of a Member

Once a scheme has been established every property within the scheme is automatically included.

Everyone has a role to play

Everyone has a role to play within their community to ensure a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme is effective.
