Greenwich Borough Neighbourhood Watch Association latest news:

An update from the Borough Commander

Posted on 20 February 2012

I am writing to inform you of the forthcoming changes that will take place from the 20th of February 2012 and will affect our Safer Neighbourhoods teams in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

The Commissioner and the Metropolitan Police Service are committed to keeping London safe and to do so it’s necessary for us to maintain a balance of highly visible and publicly accessible uniform officers and specialist investigators. In light of this, the MPS has recently completed a recruitment process to employ new police constables from a pool of successful applicants, all of whom are currently PCSOs or members of the Special Constabulary.

As part of this process, twenty-three PCSOs form Greenwich have passed their assessment and will soon be patrolling the streets as police constables. This is excellent news for them as individuals and presents us with some challenges regarding our Safer Neighbourhoods Teams. The newly recruited officers will be posted across all 32 London boroughs, and it is possible that some of our PCSOs may return to Greenwich as police constables.

In the meantime, we remain committed to ensure that each of our Safer Neighbourhoods teams meet the minimum-strength requirement model of 1 sergeant, 2 police officers and 3 PCSOs. Supt. Chris Hafford is working closely with my senior management team to ensure that all wards have the right level of cover from Monday the 20th of February. This will mean that some PCSOs from enhanced Safer Neighbourhoods teams will be re-deployed to assist other teams across the borough.

Please be reassured that my officers and staff will continue to provide excellent neighbourhood policing services, ensuring that visible and accessible policing resources are dedicated to local communities to address local issues.

Please do not hesitate to contact my office if you need further information.

Yours Sincerely

Chief Supt. Richard Wood
Borough Commander.
